Title: Changing Tide
Author:  DP Denman
Genre: M/M contemporary romance
North Shore Publishing
Paperback & Ebook
Amazon | Smashwords

For Jack Lewis love comes from unexpected places…so does tragedy. When David arrived on Vancouver Island, he was just another tourist looking to charter a boat. A few hours on the water together proves he is more than that. As a world traveler, David is a man of mystery who has been everywhere and seen everything.

Attraction draws them together but an attempt at a meaningless fling fails one touch at a time when Jack feels more than he thought he would. The love affair sparks fear in David and jealousy in Emerson, the man who frequents Jack’s bed in a relationship that is all sex and no soul.

At odds with the men in his life Jack tries to talk David into staying and Emerson into going. The attempt sends things spinning out of control and he struggles with the consequences that could leave him empty handed.

Excerpt:

Emerson aimed for alluring and innocent as he lay stretched out on the bed with that look and a pout on his lips. He missed it by several yards but Jack saw no reason to tell him that. He just pulled on his boxers and let that make the statement for him. He could beg if he wanted but it wasn’t going to work.

“Fine,” Emerson huffed and pillowed his head in his arms, turning his face to the wall. “If you’re going to treat me like a whore then I’m not going to bother getting up to make you coffee.”

“I can make my own coffee,” he stepped into his jeans and zipped them. “And I’m not treating you like a whore,” he crouched beside the bed and slid fingers into Emerson’s hair, gripping the strands to tug his head back and kiss the pout.

Emerson tried to turn it into something more but he broke it before he had a chance. He knew that game and like a lot of things, it didn’t work anymore. Over the past year, he’d grown immune to Emerson, to a certain extent, most of the time.

“One of these days I’m going to put my foot down, Jack,” Emerson called after him as he headed for the door. “None of this coming and going whenever you please, bullshit. I deserve better than that.”

“Funny, but I’ve never heard you complain about the coming part,” he tossed him a smile, stepped outside and pulled the door closed on the rest of the argument.

Excerpt:
(July 7, 2012) The News

Bombs exploded on the evening news, one after the other. Body parts flew past the camera. The headline across the bottom of the screen read: “20 Army Intelligence Officers Dead.”

“Early this morning, a bomb exploded in the Army Intelligence building, killing twenty American soldiers from Platoon 518,” the blond newswoman reported.

Will Kelley squinted as the fuzzy security images played behind the woman’s head, searching through the chaos for reassurance. Nothing. His heart pounded and he tried to swallow, but found only dry air in his mouth and throat. The female reporter described the weapons used and structural damage done in vivid detail, which made for sensational television, but failed to answer any questions for the people at home. Victims’ families had to be notified before the media could release their names. So blondie would lose her job if she read the list in front of her.

“What the hell are you doing, man? We open in thirty minutes and you’re watching television?” Seth, his roommate, demanded from the doorway of the living room.

“Answered your own question, didn’t you?” Will responded.

“Are you ready?”

“No.” Will did not take his eyes off the screen. “I’ll drive myself.”

“When?”

The report flashed to an increase in allergies in children, so Will switched to another station while typing “Attack on American S2 Building in Afghanistan” into Google. It wouldn’t be that easy, though. So Will tried several more combinations of search terms before finding a video shot by an insurgent involved in the attack. The camera shuddered. Focused on different areas of the chaos. Men ripping clothes off soldiers. Looting. Bodies blown to bits. A man removing computer hard drives. And only one face. On the severed head of Major Evans.

“Will!” Seth jabbed him in the shoulder with a pen. Will forced his eyes away from the computer. “What happened?”

“Mike’s platoon was attacked. Twelve survivors.”

“Shit,” Seth said. “Can you call…?”

Will took a slug from the nearby water bottle. “Who? No one will talk to me. I’m not my husband’s family.”
Seth stared at him for a long moment and said, “I’ll have Casey cover for you.”

Will stood and shook his head. “Why? I can’t do anything here except watch the same videos over and over. May as well see if I can make some money.” He shut his computer and set it on the side table. “Meet you there. I won’t be too late. Promise.” He had to stop himself from scoffing as the meaningless word left his lips.

“Will…” Seth began.

“You wanted me to move, I’m moving! Go. I’ll be there.” He walked toward his bedroom, Seth’s gaze burning into his back. Stopping to throw a glance over his shoulder, he added, “Don’t tell Casey. I can do without her mother-henning me.”

“Will…”

“Please, Seth.”

“Sure,” he agreed.

“Thanks,” Will said as he climbed the steps and closed his bedroom door. He leaned against the wood cutting him off from the rest of the world. His eyes roamed the four walls decorated with band posters, a white board, and his wedding picture. Will strode over and fingered the golden frame. Behind the glass lay a photograph of Will and Mike in tuxes in the middle of their first dance. Their smiles easily outshined the gold on the frame. Mike had always been handsome with broad, built shoulders and muscular pecs, leading to abs you could grate cheese on.

But none of that stood out to Will, not on their wedding day of the year before. Mike’s blue eyes radiated a strength and hope. Will removed his wedding band to read the promise inscribed: No Flag.

Please keep your promise, Mike, Will thought as he took a deep breath and tore himself away from the picture and the crushing memories it brought. He had a job to do tonight.

Last week, WH Smith and Kobo in the UK removed all self-published books from their sites after tabloid journalists pointed out that people could find pornograpic books depicting abuse, incest, rape or bestiality on their websites. Instead of removing the offending books, they removed ALL self-published titles: sci-fi, fantasy, horror, children's books as well as erotica. I won't link to the particular articles, but I'm sure a search will find them.

Now, it seemed to be that their stance was they didn't want all this horrible erotica cluttering up their pristine servers. But wait, erotica isn't gone, just self-published erotica. They are still selling Fifty Shades of Grey, The Story of O and lots of stuff from Marquis de Sade for example. WH Smith also sells explicit top-shelf porn magazines and they haven't been removed from their stores. Not to mention Flowers in the Attic, rape and incest in that one.

This is not so much a cull of erotica as it is a cull of self-published books no matter what genre. All my books are gone from there, only 2 of which were erotica and 1 was with a small press publisher.

Have the big 6 suddenly woken up one day and realised that their margins are being eaten away by authors who have cut out the middle-man and are finally able to make a reasonable income from their work rather then the 10 per cent a publisher could offer? What to do? Let's get rid of the competition, that will help!

I don't know if Kobo and WH Smith realise that most writers are also readers. I spend a lot of money on books, a lot, but WH Smith or Kobo won't be seeing one penny of my money any time soon. I will be buying my books from book websites or shops that are friendly to independent authors.

The sites are also worried that children might see these erotica books which begs the question - what is a child doing unsupervised on the Internet? Shouldn't the parents be parenting? And if Smashwords can have an adult filter, why can't every other book site? It can't be that difficult to implement, surely? Oh, but wait, if they had an adult filter things like 50 Shades won't show up in a general search. They don't want to lose out on the money.

So if you're a reader who wants to support independent authors, give Kobo and WH Smith a miss.

Title: Blood Brothers (Rocky Mountain Shifters #2)
Author: Susan Arden
Genre: Werewolves, Vampire, Ex-military
Publication Date: September 22, 2013
Publisher: Decadent Publishing
Event Organised by Literati Author Services

Synopsis

As wolf shifters, Tristen and Fin’s loyalty knows no bounds. Yet these close shifters lack the ability to speak from the heart. This pervasive silence leaves them without the means to overcome problems plaguing their relationship. Tristen suffers from PTSD and refuses Fin’s suggestions for help. Fin becomes a shifter of fewer and fewer words. As lovers, they meet each other’s beta needs until Fin craves a rougher edge. A kinky edge.

Santo, another ex-soldier and vampire is looking for work, a place to belong after he swears off bloodsucking, given his battlefield experiences. Running security for the head of the local shifter’s council seems perfect. Cue Fin and Tristen to help.

Now, the three come together for a night of kink, learning that sex can be a means to discover deeper desires. Fin and Tristen must decide if they will stay together, or if sex with a seductive vampire is the doorway to the end.

Caution: This tale will tantalize, causing flaming fantasies to the point of searing. Be ready to sweat.

Excerpt:

Fin watched as Santo lifted his jacket off the seat of the booth, and extracted an envelope. He slid it across the table to Tris. “My references.”

As a wolf shifter, Santo had lost that sensual allure that had captivated Fin. He was still a powerfully built man, but the fluid, seductive qualities that had fascinated him originally were gone. The wolf was earthy while the vampire was air.

Fin swung his gaze to his partner. Tris’s skin glowed and he appeared pumped, ready for action. Excitement lashed around Fin’s chest. Pulled tight. Tristen was fire, burning and blazing, his heat so consuming it was hard to be next to him without being overtaken and incinerated. It became easy to acquiesce to Tris’s suggestions.

It was also the reason Fin wanted to have a third for one session. Someone who’d make Tristen understand his needs that typically got shoved aside as his lover fucked him every which way except what he needed. Now it was like being in a home pack, a very cagey clan that made him think of running up the valley and along the southern range, and he’d be low man. He had no desire to be a wolf tonight. He wanted seduction in his human form.

What he wanted was candlelight, hot oil, and chilled vodka shots while they explored each other’s bodies.

He glanced at his partner and did a double-take. Tristen casually rubbed his hands down the front of his body, over his very prominent hard-on, and a growl worked up his throat as he smiled that mesmerizing smile of his at Santo. Fin didn’t need to be a mind reader to know Tristen liked what he saw. Goddammit. His lover was actually excited. Now the condom might very well be on the other dick.

Without another thought, he stroked downward along Tristen’s crotch and sure enough, he was ragingly rigid. The man rocked against his fingers, their eyes snapping together. Fin didn’t know if he should laugh or punch Tristen.

“Now who’s ready and willing?” Fin asked dryly.

Cover Artist: Harris Channing
Available from: Amazon | Bookstrand | Amazon UK | Amazon CA

Description:

After witnessing his father's murder, Victor Bronte runs for his life. He hides out in a pub where he meets Mark Murphy, a charming, handsome guy who's had his share of bad luck. They quickly hit it off, making Victor forget the killer's after him.

Mark Murphy's been wallowing in self-pity ever since his cheating ex broke his heart. When he meets Victor, the sexy hunk who offers him a supporting ear and a drive home, he quickly forgets his woes and becomes smitten. As their love blossoms, they promise to take things slow. Not an easy feat when the urge to tear each other's clothes off and make passionate love dominates their every thought.

But that's the least of their problems because the killer's still out there, and now he has a new target. In order to protect Mark, Victor has to give the killer what he wants. But he has to figure out what it is first. To do that he has to go back to the very place his father was murdered. Time is ticking, and so is the killer's patience and desire for blood.

Review:

There was one important part I missed when I decided to review this book: that it had vampires in it. Personally, I don't find anything to do with vampires or blood sexy but kudos to the author there, this was not a book about a sexy vampire, he was nothing but a cold-blooded murderer and not a love interest at all.

After witnessing his father's murder, Victor takes shelter in an Irish pub/diner in Chicago, falling instantly in lust with the owner's handsome brother, Mark Murphy. The sparks fly instantly between them, but they think they ought to take things slow as they try and figure out what the killer is after and keep Victor safe from him too. Their 'let's keep things slow' doesn't last very long, they can't resist each other ;)

The love scenes between them are sensual and hot, but I was jarred out of the scenes a bit when the words 'dick' and 'ass' were used. If you're American, it probably won't bother you, but in the UK the word 'dick' is normally used to refer to an idiot or an unpleasant person and so should be nowhere a love scene. Probably a cultural thing but it did mar my enjoyment somewhat.

They are both fully fleshed out characters with a connection that starts first as lust but grows into something more by the end of the book. The pace is lightning fast, you can read it all in one sitting and the writing flows very well. A little bit of the 'love at first sight' trope, but sometimes that's just what you're in the mood for.

An enjoyable read with two hot leading men, what more could you ask for?

He’s the one you dream about.

He’s the one you obsess over.

He’s the one you’d kill for.

Dice Valentine was born to strip. With the body of a god that drips with sex appeal, his dance moves leave his male clients breathless and begging for more. But lost in a dark world of hedonism and indulgence, Dice is beginning to want out. That is until a night of mind-blowing sex with a mysterious lover takes a grim, shocking turn, and he finds himself in a desperate attempt to clear his name…as the hunter becomes the hunted.

“Blackout” is a haunting dark tale of sex and betrayal that raises doubts about what exactly is the truth.

Review:

Dice Valentine is a stripper who loves his job, or at least that's what he tries to tell himself, but if he's resorting to drugs every night before he performs just to make it through the show, I think he's lying to himself. As someone who has suffered lots of different side-effects from different medications, taking drugs as a leisure pursuit is not something I would find appealing and I was unsure how I would relate to Dice as a character. One of the first scenes is a drug-taking one.

I needn't have worried too much, most of the book doesn't revolve around drugs, but rather Dice's obsession with a mystery man in the audience who he has been meeting for casual sex in the alleyway of the club after Dice's performance finishes. Dice has been used to lots of hedonisic, casual sex with no emotions or feelings involved but then he starts wishing for something more from this mystery lover. And that's when his life really turns sour, for Dice finds the man brutally murdered in the alleyway.

Dice wakes up in his own bed, with no idea of how he got there and only vague memories of discovering the body. Dice's blood is found on the victim and Dice becomes the main suspect. Even he isn't sure whether or not he committed the crime.

I wasn't sure how well the sex and mystery would go together and I have to say that for my preference, there was a bit too much sex and not enough mystery. Mind you, all this sex is Dice's way of dealing with things, so it was realistic for him as a character.

The pace is good and the story keeps you guessing right to the end, I didn't see the twist, which makes a change for me. There are lots of red-herrings along the way so you get to play detective along with Dice. It's very well written, it flows well and the sex scenes are hot and sensual. Sexual tension between Dice and various characters simmers throughout and you are left breathless.

The book is set in the UK, but there were a lot of Americanisms which jarred me out of the story a bit - a detective carrying a gun as routine - no, they don't do that. Sidewalks instead of pavements, gas pedal instead of accelerator and things like that. Thankfully there were no faucets instead of taps ;)

All in all a good read if you want a steamy erotic tale with a bit of mystery thrown in.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I always have some sort of path planned out from beginning to end--but I rarely end up taking it.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

yes, of course! I usually let them. :)

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular?

I'm not sure how to answer that because I really don't know. Beautiful One is set in Ancient Greece, in the theater world which was mostly men. The story just naturally grew from that time period/setting.

Do you write in other genres besides M/M?

Yes, sure. M/f historical and contemporary, PNR, SFR...really wherever the story leads.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Both. I take a nap midday and then sleep 3-5 hours at night. :)

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes, I've written stories that take place in Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Druid Ireland...and the next four books are set in New York City.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Greek theater has always captivated me, and writing a story where Sophocles is a character was just too much fun to resist. I'd imagine there were lots of good looking young guys wandering the streets of Athens during the theatrical festivals.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

Trust your gut. Always.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

The book won't write itself. Butt in chair!

Book Description:

Welcome to the world of Nyw’Gaia where genetically engineered werewolves and vampires have battled for centuries. They fight to the death. They, most certainly, do not fall in love…

An illegally made vampire in his father’s Nosferatu army, Prince Skyy Hi’daat leaves the city of Nocturne for the lush alien domain beyond.  He finds this world filled with exotic inhabitants who would just as readily kill him as look at him. He is unprepared for the desire he feels in facing the werewolf that is supposed to be his natural enemy. Ravished and then rescued, his vengeance knows no bounds for the creature that dared put his filthy paws upon him.

Cathedron is the city of Arachnae’s greatest champion. On a deadly stealth mission to infiltrate Nocturne and discover the source of the infection that is eating the world, he finds he cannot help but hunt Nocturne’s gorgeous dark prince. Skyy’s scent ignites his desires in a way that is strictly criminal. Remembrances of Skyy’s body fires his blood against every law, against his own common sense. The wolf is determined to have the vampire again and make Skyy his forever.

Against the heat of the passion that threatens to consume them both, Nyw’Gaia is dying. An ancient darkness is infecting the denizens of the world and killing everything in its path. Their love is forbidden, but only their love can save Nyw’Gaia now.

Excerpt:

The wolf was covered in the pierced and tattooed designs so prevalent amongst the ruins of the First Colony. The markings denoted a complete surrender to savagery, a negation of even the faintest hint of civilization. Skyy had seen designs like them in the museums and art galleries of Nocturne. They were an intermingling of the human-like designs of the First Colony along with the artwork of the aliens that had populated the planet before the first human settlers had landed hundreds of years before. The werewolf wore inked bands across the hard muscles of his arms that might have favored the Celtic designs brought from Old Earth had they not been populated with ja’anaszi stones—tiny glittering jewels that radiated with the uncanny inner light found at the mined core of Nyw’Gaia. Ja’anaszi stones were illegal in the City of Nocturne, the tiny rocks imbued with a narcotic so strong it had been known to kill on contact. Once placed upon the flesh, the stones bonded with the skin and needed the aid of a skilled surgeon to be removed. Often whole limbs were lost in the procedure. And the werewolf wore enough of them to kill an entire human district. The stones were known to be a glittering white, the light inside them throbbing to the heartbeat of the wearer. The stones the wolf wore were an uncharacteristic blood red.

Raven hair slid in a straight black wave down the creature’s shoulders and inky eyebrows arched over long black lashes. His finely sculpted face, complete with smooth cheeks and high cheekbones, was the home of arched raven eyebrows, which rose to peaks over those incredible eyes. There was something so wild about the look of him that it captivated Skyy.

He could not look away as the wind picked up the long inky cape of the werewolf’s hair and played with it, jangling the multi-colored beads and tangerine feathers that decorated it. The picture was both spellbinding and incredible and the new vampire’s mind took its sweet time processing it all, down to the silver metal and ja’anaszi stone collar that decorated the beast’s throat. Still, not quite used to his new perceptions, Skyy found this creature as fascinating as the Trinity and his body reacted to its presence in much the same manner as he had reacted to the Three Moons. The beast sparkled, the blood red stones embedded in his flesh glittering like sustenance and Skyy was suddenly filled with the dark hunger that denoted what he was, but there was something else to it…a certain and undeniable lust of a completely carnal nature.

Interview with Raquel Taylor

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I find it impossible to write with a plan. I get an idea or a character and just starting writing. Doing things in this way never fails to lead to chaos, but it’s a beautiful kind of chaos and I enjoy sorting it out.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

While my characters do not want take over a story, they do have minds of their own. I can’t make them do anything they really don’t want to do. I am currently working with three veryunruly characters, while they don’t want to take over, they don’t exactly want to behave either.

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular?

It’s just another love story to me. The draw is always the same, always love.

Do you write in other genres besides M/M?

I write in whatever genre I am inspired to write in. Sometimes the inspiration comes from a haunting song, or a beautiful picture—a character forms within the realm of that song or picture and then I go searching for a mate for that character.

What is your favourite food?

Lasagna. Like Garfield.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Night. I can’t stand the garish light of day, vampire-style. I deal with it, but I don’t like it.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I’d like to go to Japan.
Why? Gackt.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes, I enjoy travelling through the experience of writing.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Definitely.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Savage Love is a story of two people who fall in love despite the fact that they aren’t supposed to. I think this is the simplest way of describing how this book got written.

Skyy comes from a world that Cathedron labels a ‘box’. Inside that box are definite rules and a lot of lies that are mistaken for truths by those that live within the box.

Cathedron doesn’t understand boxes, doesn’t know why Skyy would want to live in one, and is determined to drag him out of that thing. The world has rules, yes. And some of those rules we must follow, but love between two consent adults is not something that one should put rules on—even if they are werewolf and vampire, even if they do, normally, kill one another on sight…

Love can save the world.

I suppose it helps that I really do believe that.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

There is a loneliness to writing that I’ve always appreciated. I was always that kid that wasn’t paying attention in class, but scrawling in a notebook. I wasn’t…there. I was wherever the story was. I’ve learned that writing with any kind of success requires a lot more of me than just producing a good story. As far as publishing goes, I learned that, just like anything else in life, you’d better look out for yourself.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I don’t think so. Everything is a learning experience. Knowledge is power.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I can be influenced by a song I hear, or a picture I see. Something beautiful deserves something beautiful in return, so if I hear or see something beautiful, I try to return the favor.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Believe in yourself—no matter what.

What are three words that describe you?

I am a dreamer.
I am … quiet.
I’m just a little bit strange.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein.
