Synopsis

The trials and tribulations of the crew and passengers of interplanetary transport vessel, The Santa Claus continues in A Cook’s Tale.

After a horrific breakup, Erron Murfin is bitter, homeless, and friendless. When the cook’s position on the Santa Claus presents itself, Erron decides to escape his current circumstances and join the crew. On board he reconnects with family friend Gamin Wells, whose own secrets and issues begin to surface upon Erron’s arrival. The least of which is the reason the pair haven’t laid eyes on one another in over twelve years.
As Erron settles into his new duties, the men on board take an interest in their newest crew member. Among those intrigued by Erron are polyamorous couple, Barrus and James. Despite Erron’s cautious nature, he’s drawn into a triad relationship with the pair.

But there’s something about Gamin…
Is Erron too damaged to confront his own feelings?
Will his past prevent him from finding what he needs?

Book Trailer

Excerpt

Unconsciously, Erron crossed his arms over his chest, but not for warmth. Danverse looked increasingly unhappy as he heard more about Erron’s state of affairs. The more he said the worse the expression became and Erron was convinced the job opportunity was fading faster and faster.
“So what made you apply for our cook’s position?”
“Needed a job and came across the Subspace Link ad. I did a little research on the SantaClaus. It looked like a good fit for me and when I found out Gamin was part of the crew, I had to take a shot."
“You know our head chef?”
“Yeah. He was my mom’s best friend when I was a kid. I never knew my dad and he was the next thing to a father figure back then. They had some major falling out back when I was nineteen and he stopped coming around. Mom wouldn’t say what. Then the Civil War broke out and in all the craziness, we lost touch. I didn’t even know he was alive until now. I figured I needed a fresh start, and touching base with him would be something I should have done ages ago.”
Danverse paused for an uncomfortably long moment as his stare intensified. Erron began to fidget in his seat as he watched his employment hunt begin again.
“Assuming I take you on, the job is every day, three meals a day. You’ll have down time, but not days off except when we’re in port. Gamin would be your direct superior, but there is still a chain of command. Living onboard isn’t a pleasure cruise, but it’s not a bad life. The crew is like a small town. We’re all in each other’s business, and we always look out for each other. I don’t have a tolerance for people who can’t play well with others.”
Erron’s eyes began to widen. Why was he telling him this? Surely the captain wasn’t saying yes?
“It sounds perfect. I’m not afraid of hard work and Gamin’s the reason I became a cook in the first place. Cooking makes me happy. I’m still waiting for you to tell me the down side.”
Danverse’s frown shifted into a sly grin. “Right now, I don’t think I’m seeing one.”
“Are you saying I can have the job?” Erron’s voice peaked as he fought to control the excitement rising in his chest. There was no doubt he seriously wanted the job, but he didn’t want it to be so horrifically obvious.
“Can you be at Landing Bay Gamma Seven One tomorrow by 09:00 hours? We’ll be in port for about a week, but I can have my security chief get you settled in before we ship out.”
The smile on Erron’s face made his cheeks ache, it was so strong. He was so elated, if he wasn’t careful he was going to be on the verge of tears. “You’re Goddamn right I can be there.”
Danverse lifted his glass in salute. “Well then, Mr. Murfin. Welcome to the crew.”
Start with Book  One of Ship Logs of the Santa Claus!

About the Author

Like many gay men, when Mann Ramblings grew up, there weren’t any heroes he could relate to. The world held him back while he tried futilely to hide the real person inside. So much has changed since those hollow days. He finally found his voice, the voice that says it’s all right to revel in the so-called inappropriate joys, laughs, and loves that storm inside a man’s head. It took a long time to find that courage and now that it’s here, he plans to use it well.

While spending years more focused on visual arts, he never let go of his innate passion for storytelling—he wanted to write and draw comic books when he grew up. Once he discovered M/M fiction, a whole new world opened with new possibilities. Why couldn’t you have fantastic and dynamic tales with an M/M cast? He started reading the online tales of authors like, Night Tempest, Rob Colton, and Alicia Nordwell, which only fueled within him the need to create. Eventually he found GayAuthors.org, and with a little coercive nudge from Night Tempest, started sharing his tales with an unexpected level of positive response. That experience and support gave him the courage to cross his fingers and aim for the world of M/M publishing.

Born and raised in Michigan, Mann Ramblings continues to type away, wishing it was practical to use a noisy, old fashioned keyboard that clacks with each strike, if only to annoy his loving partner and spoiled miniature dachshund.

Excerpt:

“I’m Abbott Williams. I heard you were a detective.” The man held up a flyer as if that explained his presence.

Sam stood to shake hands. “I’m Sam Enderson. Nice to meet you. Yes, I am a detective.” He accepted the yellow paper Abbott handed over. It listed Sam’s detective agency, their location on a little map, and little else. It did have a nice picture of the building, though. “I don’t remember having any flyers printed up.”

Abbott shrugged. “I found it at the bar down the street. Anyway, I need you to follow my boyfriend around. I think he’s cheating on me. Are you interested in the job or not?”

Sam tossed the flyer on his desk to study later. Bob probably made them and forgot to tell Sam about it. “Break up with him. That’s what I did.”

“Some guy cheated on you?” Abbott made it sound as if he couldn’t imagine such a thing happening.

“Yep. But I got over it.” At least that’s what Sam kept telling himself whenever he thought of his ex’s betrayal. Bob usually pulled him out of the bad memories with a blowjob. Worked every time.

The young man’s mouth tightened in annoyance. “I can’t just break up with him.”

“Why not? If you really suspect he’s cheating on you, he probably is.” Sam knew from his own experience that glossing over problems in a relationship didn’t improve the situation. “You’re better off without him.”

“I don’t want to be without him. I love him.”

“If he loved you back he wouldn’t cheat,” Sam said flatly. He’d hate to be the one who had to tell Abbott he’d been right about his boyfriend.

“I can pay,” Abbott insisted. He pulled a wad of cash out of his pocket and tossed it on the desk. “I don’t want you to do anything else. I want to know the truth. Just find out if he’s cheating. After that, I can decide what to do.”

The man’s desperate words struck a chord with Sam. Of course, so did Abbott’s nice crinkly stack of bills. “Have a seat and tell me all about this boyfriend of yours.”

What could it hurt to do a little surveillance? After all, hadn’t Sam gotten into this business to help people? Surely hunting down one human and taking some pictures would be way easier than the other stuff he was always tangled up in. Bob should be happy that Sam finally got a non-supernatural case. At least this time no one would be trying to set him on fire.

Once he’d settled in the chair opposite Sam, Abbott handed over a photo. “This is Greg.”

Sam took the picture Abbott handed over. A dark-haired man with green eyes looked back at him.

“He’s cute.”

“I know,” Abbott said.

“Okay,” Sam began. “I’ll take the case, but the usual proviso is that if I find something you don’t like, the End Street Detective Agency can’t be held responsible.”

Abbott nodded. “I understand.”

Sam pushed across the requisite forms and disclaimers, which Abbott signed. They shook hands, and then Abbott gave some extra details about places and dates and where Sam might find the philandering boyfriend before he left.

Sam counted the money; easily enough to cover the bills for the next two weeks.

A quick, easy job for good money.

Now this was what being a private detective was all about.

About the author

Taylin Clavelli lives in the United Kingdom, about 15 miles south of Birmingham, and a short journey from the world famous Cadbury’s Chocolate factory. She’s married with children and loves her family with all her heart.

Her love of books has been a long standing affair, with Taylin liking nothing better than to lose herself in an imaginary world.

Until she met Lily Velden, she never considered trying her hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged her to put pen to paper—or rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, she hasn’t stopped. Her confidence eventually led to her writing an original work for submission.
Her first published work was Boys, Toys, and Carpet Fitters, developed for the Dreamspinner Press Anthology – Don’t Try This At Home.

Now she absolutely adores immersing herself into the characters she creates, and transferring the pictures in her brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.

Outside of writing, her interests include; martial arts (she’s a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do), horse-riding, all of which facilitates her love of a wide variety of movies. Her action heroes include Jet Li and Tony Jaa—finding the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill both amazing and a privilege to watch. If pressed, she’ll admit to thinking that the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. Her all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

The simple things in life that make her day, putting a smile on her face are:
Laughter – especially that of her children.
The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes her mouth salivate.
The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Accidental Hero by R.J. Scott

Guest Blog
Heroes and Villians by R.J Scott

It’s always so hard to come up with ideas for blogs but this time I thought I would explore bits of my favorite spy/action/buddy movies, given that Accidental Hero is a bit of both.

The movie/book villain is vital in any spy/buddie/story, because it the one thing the heroes have to defeat before they can move on. The best villain of all time was, to me, being a Star Wars freak, is Darth Vader. Oh my God, when I saw Star Wars for the first time (aged 10) I was so scared of him. The absolute unbeatable power he had, meant that the destruction of the death star became so much more; the heroes had overcome the near impossible.

And Hans Gruber in Die Hard – the perfect evil nasty, randomly shooting people, apparently without morals, or redemption, he had to die, and boy was his death a good one! His evil was the perfect foil for John McClane’s white T-shirted, bare footed, hero. Oh, and T-1000 (the silvery changing baddie from Terminator 2) he was again apparently unbeatable, which made his ending all the more sweet.

A good bad guy will have you rooting more for the hero.

Do you have a favorite bad guy or villain in a book or film?

Excerpt:

Everyone wants us dead.

Cops. The entire Drugs & Gangs team. Varga. Any of them, all of them, they all want us gone.

Simon Grant crab-walked backward, reaching the wall and curling his knees up so that he was as far away from the body as possible. Blood pooled in a macabre circle of scarlet, spreading almost to his feet. What was left of Jamie Harrington’s face was toward him, and Simon couldn’t look. He closed his eyes tight, aware the sight of broken skin and shattered bone would never leave his memory.

I’m telling you, we should talk to someone outside the precinct.

The last words Jamie had said just a day before. Mere hours before Simon had found this tableau of blood and gore, laid out before him.

A noise had him plastering himself against the wall, belatedly realizing it was he himself who had made the sound, halfway between a groan and a keen of denial. Horror had nausea rising and he tried to breathe to calm his gorge, but all he could smell was cordite and blood.

“I should have—” not said a fucking thing to anyone. Simon finished the harsh words that had begun out loud and ended inside, where he knew he would keep them forever.

He pushed his hand through his hair, anchoring his fingers in the length of it, blood smearing his skin. Then he crawled over, the wetness of blood soaking his pants, and felt for a pulse.

Jamie had half his face missing, his dark hair and skull matted, and one of his eyes blasted away… no face.

He’s gone, and I checked for a fucking pulse.

Simon froze in place. A gun lay in the blood, obscenely black against the red, just inches from Jamie’s outstretched hand as if he’d been reaching for it, looking up at his attacker and hoping to hell he reached the police-issue gun before he was killed. Why had it been left?

For fuck’s sake, think. Analyze the situation.

Was Simon supposed to pick it up, put his prints all over it? Was the killer watching, waiting for him to fuck up, waiting for him to be blamed for the death of his partner?

He had to box away the horror, push aside the shock and grief, and think.

He counted down from five and considered what next. The apartment was on the second floor. Whoever did this could be waiting or coming for him next; there was a gun in the blood, and Jamie was dead. What if it wasn’t Jamie’s gun? Simon looked around the otherwise spotless room, grabbed the nearest bag he could see—a brown grocery bag—upending it. The apples and cans inside spilled into the scarlet on the wooden floor. Had Jamie been out shopping? Did his murderer follow him home?

Just to one side, a bouquet of red roses lay half in and half out of the pool of blood. The white paper they were wrapped in had darkened in places; petals lay on the ground, weighed down by blood.

Simon used the grocery bag to pick up the gun. Long strings of sticky scarlet linked the gun to the floor for a moment and Simon pushed back sickness again. He’d seen death before, but never one that hit so close to home.

He turned his head to get some fresh air from the open window. The sound of sirens closing in was enough to have him leaving the apartment, turning left instead of right, moving to the back of the building and the way he knew he would be able to get out. Going up instead of down, he made it to the roof in record time, only a little winded. The gun was in the bag, pushed firmly into a pocket of his jacket.

He stepped back right near the edge and centered himself. Counting in his head again, he sprinted toward the next building and jumped the six-foot gap, landing and rolling onto solid roofing on the other side. He fell heavily on the gun, shoving it into his ribs, but he’d made it across and that was no mean feat.

The exit plan had been formed amid teasing and laughter over beers at Jamie’s last get-together for colleagues, on that clear Chicago night.

“You’ll never make it across,” Jamie had said on a belch. “Your short ass and stubby legs will have you tumbling into the alley. You’ll end up in a dumpster, and don’t think anyone’ll come get your stinking body.”

Simon had shoved him. “Five ten is not short, asshole.”

I can’t think of Jamie now. I made it over.

He looked around for somewhere to hide the gun. No way was he getting caught with it. He shoved it into the air intake, pushed it a long way back to a small shelf area. Done.

Why am I even keeping it?

“Because there may be other prints, or a trace, or something,” he answered his own question. “If it isn’t Jamie’s gun, we might be able to….”

To what? Why did you take it? Are you stupid? You took evidence?

With stealth he made his way across the roof and to the stairs, taking them three at a time and landing lightly on the first floor. From there he took a joining walkway to yet another apartment block and finally left that by using the fire escape, stopping only to scrub his face to clear away any blood. Finally he joined the crowds walking the sidewalk with purpose. They parted before him, some acknowledging him with nods, others bypassing him, and some shooting him guilty looks. A couple cursed him as he walked against the flow, but no one stopped him. No one shot at him, no one shouted. There was no recognition of who he was inside the uniform.

He was just another Chicago cop on the beat. Nothing to stand out. As long as he walked steadily and with resolution and didn’t break out into a panicked run, no one would look twice past the badge.

At soon as he could, he stepped into business premises—a coffee shop. He went straight to the bathroom, washed his face and his hands properly, then looked critically at his uniform. There was blood there—Jamie’s blood—but the dark blue of the uniform was enough to cover it. He pulled out his cell and stared at it for the longest time. It was nothing special, but it had all his numbers in there. Including Elliot’s. It also had a GPS chip that could be traced. No way was he calling anyone or reaching out.

He fingered the card in his pocket.

“Here, if you need anything…”

Elliot had told both him and Jamie. Promised them a place where they could get help. Even at that moment Simon had placed his faith squarely in the cops he served with, Jamie as well.

“This is bigger than just you two,” Elliot told them.

Excerpt:

Owen traced the scar on his cheek. “My wolf marked me. Showed the world he disapproved of me. No pack would accept a troublemaker.”

To Owen’s surprise, this time Zeke did trace the jagged line with his fingertip. “Your wolf did this?”

“My alpha did this, Cal’s father. My wolf refused to let it heal as a sign he disapproved of me. Shifters don’t scar and they can’t be killed. He let me be scarred to show he thinks I’m a disappointment.” It was more than that, but he couldn’t explain shifter politics in a couple of sentences to a human.

Zeke’s eyebrows almost knit together. “But—”

“Wait ’til we get to the ranch, Zeke,” Eli said. “Owen needs to be told the full story.”

“What story?” Owen snapped.

Zeke laid a hand on Owen’s thigh. “Wait another ten minutes.”

Owen wanted to argue. He would have argued except that hand on his thigh told him he didn’t need to. Everything would be fine. Owen stared at Zeke’s hand spanning his thigh. If any other man had done this to him, the guy would have been minus five fingers by now. He never let anyone touch him aside from the occasional hookup, and that was a blow job or a quick fuck. Zeke had touched his shoulder and now his leg and Owen had let him. He went to push Zeke’s hand off his but, instead, he laid his hand on Zeke’s. He was so involved in thinking about this he didn’t notice the SUV had stopped and someone had opened the door.

“Great, you found him. Hey, Owen.”

Owen looked up to see a young man grinning at him. “Cal?” The last time he’d seen Cal he was a weedy adolescent with a scared, furtive expression, who spent a lot of his time hiding from his bullying brothers. Now he was tall and handsome, exuding a confidence Owen didn’t expect from an omega. “Christ, I’d never have recognized you.”

“It’s been a long time.”

Owen stared at the kid. Only three years separated them, yet Owen easily looked a decade older than Cal, his life on the road and bitter experiences having aged him.

Eli looked around. “Cal, we need to get back inside.”

Cal nodded and looked at Owen again. “Come on in. Zeke, are you coming?”

“I’ll do a sweep of the area, then I’ll be in.”

“Joe’s feeding the horses.”

“I’ll check on him.” Zeke made sure he caught Owen’s gaze.

Owen held back his protest but he wasn’t happy at Zeke leaving him alone.

“I’ll be with you in ten.”

“Ten minutes? You promise?” Wait! Owen stared at Zeke. “I can hear you!”

And that meant…

Owen stared at Zeke in dismay. “You’re my mate!”

Jayden is like no one Harris has ever met, but can Harris let go of the real world to love him?

***

Excerpt:

There was a…tall bird of a man behind the counter, head bobbing and hair tied up in a gigantic tall ponytail like some sort of samurai warrior. The guy caught sight of Harris and waved. “Come in out of the rain! It will stop soon.”

“Yeah, as soon as I’m not in it.” He tried for a smile, but Harris knew it was sour.

“Well, you’re welcome here, and we’ve got all the things to make a bad day better.”

“Promise me something amazing in the way of pastry. Nothing plastic.” He did grin then, looking at the coffee menu.

“I have a chocolate croissant that’s made in-house. It’s like sex in pastry form.”

Sex? Harris wasn’t sure he remembered that anymore.

“Yeah? I’ll take it.” He was so tired of bad doughnuts and shitty pseudo-Danishes from big box stores.

“What would you like to drink?”

“Mexican chocolate latte?” Harris asked. A little spice might warm him.

“Absolutely. I’m on it. Have a seat.”

“Thanks.” Harris sat at the counter, taking the pressure off his sore ankle. The chrome and vinyl was more diner than coffee shop. He really liked the vibe.

A wild man pushed through the door, dark hair interspersed with tiny strands of pure silver. He wore a t-shirt and a pair of jeans that appeared three sizes too big and patched with at least two dozen colorful pieces of fabric. “Jack! Jack, I need coffee! Stat!”

The barista chuckled, the sound fond and warm. “Jayden. Sit.”

“Seriously. Inspiration has struck. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak!” The guy flopped on a stool next to Harris.

“Poor flesh.” Jack winked at Harris, handed him the most luscious-looking pastry in known history and a coffee that smelled like heaven. “Drip coffee, honey?”

“A triple espresso with a float of hazelnut, please.”

“You’re on a mission, Jayden.”

“Uh-huh.” The man pulled out a sketchbook, opened it up and started drawing everything. The coffee maker appeared, then the pastry case. It was like magic.

Harris knew he was being rude with the staring, but he couldn’t help it. He’d always wanted to be artistic but he’d ended up imminently practical.

The cup landed in front of Jayden, the hazelnut syrup floating on the top almost glittering. Kind of mesmerizing the way it swirled.

“Hello, beautiful,” Jayden said, grabbing the cup.

Harris took a sip of his drink, closing his eyes at the flavor.

“It’s like magic, huh?” Jayden nudged him with one elbow just as if they were old buddies.

“Yeah. I mean, wow, that’s good.” Harris was amazed.

“No shit.” One paint stained hand was offered over. “Jayden.”

“Harris. Nice to meet you.” Harris didn’t talk to people in coffee shops. He usually brought his laptop and buried his head in plans and schematics.

“Harris. That’s a cool name. Sort of tough, totally masculine.”

“Thanks. My dad is a Leslie, so he wanted me to have something chest beating, manly good.”

Jayden nodded. “Leslie is a softer name. My father is a Daniel. Biblical.”

“God is my judge,” Harris said, pulling that arcane knowledge right out of his ass. “You’re an artist, huh?”

“Yeppers. I’m a painter. You?” Those eyes were almost black, like obsidian. Stunning combination with Jayden’s pale skin. And the man’s face was unlined, but he had silver in his hair.

“I do restoration architecture. Structural stuff mostly.” Sounded so boring.

“Oh, cool. Architects are hot. They understand lines and curves.”

Harris blinked, then took another sip of coffee. “Want to share my sweet?”

M.A. Church
Genre: M/M, Sci-Fi
Publisher: ARe Books
Date of Publication: November 1, 2015
Word Count: 54,000
Cover Artist: Erin Dameron-Hill

Book Description:

When you wish upon a star… it comes true in ways you never expected.

Things have gone downhill since Sheriff Bryan Coltrane got involved in the FBI’s investigation of a recent UFO crash. Not only is a homophobic agent pushing his buttons, but he’s made contact with one of the aliens…who wants him for a mate!

Daroshi, a warrior with tentacles from the planet Maz’Rar, monitored the rescue of his captain, Ziang. Impressed by the courageous and brawny human male, he wants Bryan for his own despite knowing little about the race. Neither man is prepared for the problems arising from Daroshi’s desires, or the passion exploding between them.

What’s an alien to do when his mate harps on his civil rights and makes demands? He makes the wishes come true.

Excerpt:

Bryan came awake with a snap. One second there was nothing, then the next he was awake, his body jacked up with adrenaline. His heart went from zero to sixty in two seconds flat, and his muscles tightened.

His brain yelled at him through the sludge in his mind. Danger! Confused, he lay quietly, not moving. Something teased the edge of his brain, a warning that something was wrong—dreadfully, Earth-shatteringly wrong. He fought to control his breathing as he tried to figure out the hazy feeling of impending danger that haunted him. Earth-shattering wrong… Earth…

“Fuck!” Bryan yelled as memories exploded over him.

He reared up on the table, his head bobbing back and forth, eyes wide. The room he was in reminded him of a creepy alien movie set with its dim lighting, odd symbols, strange equipment, and funky-colored walls that looked… alive.

Fear snaked through his chest as he recalled those two tall-ass fuckers chasing him through his house. The knowledge that he was screwed—totally and completely screwed—scared him witless. He was more than likely going to die here.

“Fuck!” he yelled again, his hands frantically pawing at his naked chest as another memory hit him.

He’d been shot. One of them raised its arm, fired a beam of light at him, and shot him—then darkness. He took the hit in the chest. So where was the pain, the mess of being shot, the blood? There was nothing: no hole, no burn from whatever they shot him with, no blood. Just nothing.

A boot scraped across the floor, and he looked up. Both aliens he’d fought with were moving toward him. Neither had their faceguards on this time. Bryan sat stunned. They looked amazingly human in the face.

On each side of their necks was a thick cord of muscle that thinned as it reached their ears. The shape of their noses was human, but flared. There was a ridge running down the middle too. They had high foreheads and scales around the eyes. Their eyes were human-shaped, but the sclera was red instead of white with vertically split pupils.

In place of eyebrows, there was a line of scales, and under the eyes were marks that looked like small symbols. The shape of their lips was also human. Instinct kicked in. He pulled his leg up and grabbed the knife out of his ankle sheath. If he was going to die then, by God, he was going to go down fighting. He gripped the knife as the smaller of the two aliens approached.

“Bryan, don’t!” Daroshi held one hand out while he waved frantically at Ziang to stay back. “Put that down. We’re not going to hurt you.”

Startled, the knife wavered in Bryan’s grasp. He could understand them perfectly. “How the hell can I understand you?”

“I implanted a device that helps translate language. We all have one. I did it while you were unconscious. No one’s going to harm you, so put the knife down.”

Horrified, Bryan stared at the smaller alien. They messed around in his head? What else had they done to him? Did they not understand consent and boundaries? “Yeah, right, that’s not happening.”

“Bryan, you’re on my spaceship orbiting Earth. There’s no way off this ship,” Ziang said. “I know you’re frightened, but I give my word you’re safe. Put the weapon down.”

“Your word—that’s supposed to mean something to me?” Bryan clutched the weapon tighter. “If you plan to kill me, I will—”

“Kill you?” Daroshi gasped at the direction Bryan’s thoughts had run. “Gods, no! Why would you think that? The last thing I want is you dead. We’re not going to harm you.”

“Not going to harm me? Are you kidding me? Last I checked knocking me out, hauling my ass here, and messing with my brain—shit, you put something in my damn head—falls in the category of harming me.” Bryan shot a glance at Ziang, who stood frozen. “Why the fuck am I here? What do you want with me? I didn’t tell anyone about you. I went out of my way to cover for you. So what the hell?”

Daroshi took a deep breath and moved closer. “I’ll explain everything to you, but I need you to put the weapon down.”

“I don’t fucking think so.”

Daroshi took a step closer. “Bryan—”

“Stop! Don’t get any closer. I will use this.”

“Would you believe Shawn?” Ziang suddenly asked. Something had to be done before the situation escalated more out of control. “Would seeing my mate help you understand we aren’t going to hurt you? Do you understand I’m willing to put him in harm’s way to prove we won’t hurt you?”

“But, Sir—” Daroshi jerked his head to look at Ziang, shocked. Would he really do that to help Bryan and him?

“Yeah.”

Daroshi’s head snapped back around to Bryan. At this rate, he was going to have whiplash.

“Just stay calm, and I’ll have Shawn here momentarily.” Ziang tapped on his wrist device.

Ziang opened the com so Bryan could hear the conversation. “Blayno, I have an emergency in Medical. I need you to contact Shawn and transport here. Now. Tell him Bryan is here and awake.”

“Yes, Sir.” Blayno responded, then the com when silent.

“Shawn will be here shortly. But I will warn you, Bryan, you attempt to harm my mate, and I will stun you.”

Daroshi growled, the very thought of Ziang stunning Bryan triggered his protection instinct. “Ziang, if you do—”

Bryan kept his eyes on both aliens. What was going on? Both aliens looked ready to square off. “Hey, I have no intention of harming Shawn—”

“Oh, only us?” Daroshi snapped as he turned to look at Bryan.

Zing sliced his hand through the air, trying to stop what was fast building into another useless conversation. “Regardless—”

Bryan gripped the knife. “He didn’t fucking ambush my ass after I went to all the trouble of covering for you guys—”

“We couldn’t very well have walked in the front door.” Daroshi hissed. “In case you didn’t notice, we don’t look human.”

“—nor did he stun me.”

“Dear gods, come on, Shawn,” Ziang muttered.

Daroshi glared. “You stunned my commander first—”

“I had two big-ass aliens after me, of course I tased him. What did you expect after the way you busted through the window? You think I was going to offer you a beer? And fuck, my house is probably gonna burn down since I left the damn stove on!” Bryan yelled. “Son of a bitch, I left the damn stove on.”

The door to Medical opened and Shawn walked inside, with Blayno guarding him. He’d heard most of the conversation from outside.

“Huh, I did tell you he wouldn’t come without a fight.” Smirking, Shawn took in the flushed faces of Daroshi and Bryan. “Think I also warned you to disarm him.”

Daroshi threw his hands up in the air. “Are all humans like this?”

“Only the ones half scared out of their minds.” Shawn turned to Bryan. “How’s it hanging, dude?”

“Shawn?” Bryan whispered, relieved to see another actual human. “Is that really you? They didn’t, like, turn you into a pod person or something, did they? It’s really you?”

Shawn choked back a laugh. “It’s me.”

He walked closer to Bryan, and Ziang growled loudly, the sound bouncing off the walls. “Shawn, do not move any closer to him, he has a—”

“Chill out, E.T. I’m not the one he’s threatening.” Shaking his head, he jumped on the medibed and sat down next to Bryan. “Bryan, they aren’t going to hurt you, I promise. But the knife has to go, dude.”

Shawn held out his hand.

A nasty brew of emotions flooded Bryan’s throat. Fear, confusion, shock, embarrassment—and relief—spiked, and the overwhelming need to cry flooded him. No longer quite so afraid, he handed the knife to Shawn, who quickly threw it on the floor at Daroshi’s feet. Shawn held out his arms, and the bigger man fell into them.

“What do they want with me, Shawn?” Bryan’s voice was quiet.

“That would be better left to Daroshi to explain.” Shawn’s voice was just as low. “By the way, the shorter one is Daroshi. Just listen to him and keep an open mind—a very open mind—and I promise you won’t regret it. A whole new world is opening up.”

About the Book:

Liberal Austinite Travis Boyd recycles, shops local, and is partner in a successful green-building company. After his last disastrous relationship, he'll never again date a man who's not out. Bo Vargas is a cowboy-boot-wearing, meat-eating, truck-driving ode to masculinity. He's not gay. The men he picks up on business trips are just anonymous diversions. Travis isn't anonymous. And there's something about him that makes Bo want to expand his relationship options. Maybe.

Excerpt:

Travis hesitated. “I wasn’t expecting . . .” He trailed off.

“Me?” It made sense. He had been careful not to give anyone a reason to think they even played for the same team.

“No, I—” Travis gave an embarrassed little cough. “No, I definitely wasn’t expecting you.”

It sounded like there was more to it, though.

And then Bo got it. Discretion.

A wave of disappointment washed over him. Since his last trip to Austin, Travis had been his secret fantasy. Not just Travis himself, with his cute boy-next-door charm and idealistic save-the-planet philosophy, but the whole lifestyle he represented.

He remembered the talk he had overheard at Ecotecture’s office in Austin. Travis’s friends worrying about him because he had broken up with his longtime lover. Coworkers who knew he was gay and accepted him.

The conversation had brought home to Bo the reality of his own life. No one who mattered knew that side of him. He barely acknowledged that side of himself. Men were just a diversion, something he did on business trips. His Aunt Mags never drank anything stronger than a glass of wine with dinner except on vacation, when she sucked down rum like a pirate; Bo never screwed men except when he traveled. He had suddenly realized how fucked up that was.

The more he worked alongside Travis, the more he had found to like about him, and the more he had envied that easy openness. Except some of that openness had been missing lately, hadn’t it? Ever since Travis had come to El Paso, in fact, he had seemed a little subdued. Not about his work. No, he was still passionate about planet-friendly architecture, would talk your ear off if you let him. But unlike the Travis he had met in Austin, the El Paso Travis was all business. No gossip over coffee breaks. No drinks after work with the staff, despite the fact that Travis already seemed to know more about the people who worked for Bo than Bo did.

“You didn’t expect anyone who might know you,” Bo said. That felt true, but . . . “Why? You’re out. You’re single. Why would it matter?”

Travis just stared at him, a deer in the headlights. Bo sat still and let all the pieces of the puzzle rattle around in his head until the niggling difference in Travis’s behavior lately clicked into place.

“You didn’t want anyone here to know you’re gay.” He knew it was the right answer as soon as he heard himself say the words. He just didn’t understand. “Why? You don’t make any effort to hide your orientation in Austin.”

Flight attendant Tanner Bradac and his occasional make-out buddy Clark Arnold find themselves on a layover in San Francisco on the day the U.S. Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage. The wedding may have been a last-minute light-hearted lark, but Tanner and Clark are willing to give marriage a go. Tanner loves Clark—at least, he really wants to love Clark—and he figures the rest should just fall into place. How hard can being married to a guy you barely know really be?

Long Haul by Michael P Thomas

Short Blurb: On the day the Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage, Tanner Bradac doesn’t even have a boyfriend, so you can imagine his surprise when he and his buddy Clark get carried away by the celebratory spirit of the day and wind up lawfully wedded husbands. The wedding may have been a light-hearted lark, but Tanner and Clark are willing to give marriage a go. After all, how hard can it be?

Excerpt:

“I just don’t want to live in Boise. Does that make me such a terrible person?”

August was whipping along. Clark’s September report date loomed huge, casting every conversation, every afternoon in the park, every romp across Clark’s gigantic bed into shadow. Tanner was two cups in at the Sunday beer bust, soaking up the shade on the back patio with Jesse and Willis, eager to get the day’s whining about it out of the way before Clark arrived. His flight hadn’t landed until three, but it was four-thirty; he was liable to stroll up at any moment, and Tanner hoped to pass an argument-free afternoon. If such an animal still existed.

“It does not make you a terrible person,” Willis assured him.

“Although it’s a strike against you in the husband department,” Jesse apparently couldn’t resist saying.

“We’ve been married for two months. We’ve been together for two months and ten minutes. You don’t feel like ‘pack your shit and move to Idaho’ is asking kind of a lot?”

“I guess the only thing I feel like needs asking,” Jesse said, “is, Do you want to be with him?”

“And what, love will conquer all? Even if it does, love won’t fly me to Denver every time I need to get to work.”

“Do you love him?” Willis asked.

A perfectly reasonable question. Certainly when asked by a friend, certainly when asked about one’s own husband. Tanner wasn’t sure why it felt like a slap across the face.

Probably partly because the answer was still, “I don’t know.”

“God, you haven’t told him that?” Jesse said.

“I haven’t told him anything. He leaves in like ten days, I can’t even commit to driving back with him.”

“Tanner, you have to drive back with him. What’ll that take, two days? You can’t just wave goodbye from the curb, he’s your husband.”

“Yeah, well, I’m starting to get real sick of that word.”

Book Spotlight: Violence Begets by P.T. Denys

Title: Violence Begets
Author: PT Denys
Genre: YA LGBT Fiction

After a tragic accident devastates his family, 16-year-old Rick St. James starts his junior year of high school without any friends in a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. When he meets Kevin Vincent, he’s too distracted by the promise of new friends to see that Kevin has secrets of his own.

Having created an environment where he's feared and admired by his classmates, Kevin finds pleasure in using his good looks and violence to control and manipulate those around him. Secretly, he cruises the gay club scene, turning tricks to earn money so he can party and get high.

As Rick’s dad becomes increasingly violent and abusive at home, the two form a surprising and volatile trust. In this battle of wills, their precarious friendship will either keep their lives from blowing up around them or possibly light the fuse that will cause the explosion.

Excerpt:

It still hurt.  When I woke, my body had a dull ache but the pain was not nearly as bad as I’d expected.  Where was I?  I focused my eyes to the darkness and saw Kevin in a chair next to wherever it was I was lying. His arms were folded across his chest and his head was bowed with his dark hair covering his face from my sight.  From the soft snores that escaped his mouth, I knew he was asleep.  I realized I was in his room and it was dark.  I searched for a clock and found one; it was 11:17 PM.  I shifted in the bed, trying to sit upright and my movement startled Kevin.  His eyes shot open and he immediately looked at his door then to me.  He quickly looked around the room gathering his bearings then relaxed back into his chair.

“How ya feelin’?” he asked wiping the sleep from his eyes.

“Better, than I thought I would.”

“Yeah, I’ve keep you pretty drugged up.”

“How’d we get here?”

“You don’t remember?”

“No,” I said trying to piece together my last memories.  “I think I remember calling you. Did I?”

“Yeah, you did.”

“When was that?”

“In the middle of the fucking night.”

I looked at the clock again, “It’s only eleven.”

“Last night.”

“I’ve been here all day?”

“Yeah.”

“Your dad?” I asked.

“He doesn’t know.  We need to keep it that way.”

“How’d I get here?” I repeated.

“I came and got you. Brought you back.” He said shortly.

“My dad?”

“Passed the fuck out when I got there. Good thing. I didn’t want to have to fuck him up to get you out of there.”

“But how, how did we get here? I don’t remember anything.”

“You were pretty out of it but we managed.  Wasn’t easy, but,” he paused, “well I had to get you out of there.”

“Did you have help?”

“No.”

“You got me up here by yourself?” I couldn’t seem to focus on any of the real issues, instead focusing in on how I had gotten to his house.

“It’s not that big of a deal.  You hungry?” He asked getting up from his chair.

“No, not so much.”

“I’m gonna make me something, you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

When he came back he had two grilled cheese sandwiches.

“Figured, you might want this anyway.” He said putting the plate down on the nightstand.

“Thanks.” I said, still not having much of an appetite.  “I could use a smoke.”

“Think you can manage? Here, take a few shots first. It’ll help numb ya up a bit.”

“So, why is it that you always seem to be coming to my rescue?” I asked once we were outside. My lips were both swollen and dragging on the smoke made me very conscious of just how much my dad had messed me up.

“No rescue would have been needed this time if I hadn’t left you there in the first place. I should have known your dad would be gunning for you after the shit you told me.”

“Not your fault.”

“No. Still.”

“And what would you have done?  Finding you in my room at three in the morning would have only made it worse.”

“I should have known.” He mumbled.

“Knock it off.” I said irritably.

“What?”

“I mean, I can’t quite figure out what you’re after.  Don’t take this wrong, but you’re an ass.” His eyes narrowed a little as he glanced sideways at me, a warning?  I had a feeling he wouldn’t nail me in my condition so I proceeded. “I mean, you’re not one to really care much about others.  So why take care of me?”

“I’m not all bad.”

“But you’re not….good.” I stammered.

“Well Rick,” he took a long drag on his smoke, “I have my fair share of secrets.”

PT never imagined she’d actually publish a book. But, the story of Violence Begets… haunted her for over 20 years, and the lives of Kevin and Rick had to be shared.

In addition to writing a sequel, she divides her time between family, work, attending theater and reading.

Above all else she loves being a mother to 2 amazing daughters (a teenager and a baby).

PT believes that no one deserves to be intentionally hurt (physically or emotionally) by another. She also believes that behind nearly every bully is a story.

Book Excerpt:

Another rifle shot resounded and the barking of dogs followed it. It sounded like the pack of Sullivan’s dogs was smaller now, probably two or three old raggedy bitches died since the last time the gang was here. Now only about three or four dogs were barking, but they were all Dobermans, vicious as hell. Even the three of them could rip a person to shreds, which was probably even worse than a gun shot.

Josh started moving towards where the guys were hiding, moving fast, but trying to keep as low as possible.

Yet another rifle shot ripped through the silence.

“I'm gonna make you regret you ever came here, freaks! Destroying my crops, do you think this is funny?” Sullivan shouted, raging against the stupid youth. This time he was probably right. Coming here was indeed a stupid idea. Everyone on the team knew it, but they went along with it for the cause and because Ricky’s unusual determination made them believe that they could probably make it this time. They sure were wrong.

“Do you think it's a game?” he shouted again.

Josh made it to where Emily and Ricky were sitting. He joined them, but that was probably pointless; together or apart, they were screwed all the same.

“Shit, guys! Shit!” Josh whispered, distinctly hearing the rustle of dogs running through the wheat somewhere not far away from here really, really not far away.

Ricky commanded in a loud whisper, “Keep quiet!”
