Angel’s Feather by Alina Popescu

Recently released gay science fiction novella Angel’s Feather, the first book in the Flyer Chronicles series.

Why Is Science Fiction So Enthralling?

I can’t remember a time where I didn’t love science fiction. I had my first sci-fi reading experience when I was about ten, and I got hooked. Sure, there were a few years before that when I had no clue what sci-fi was, but that’s so far back, it’s hard to remember how my world could be without the exploration of humanity’s futures.

Of all the genres I’ve ever read, none provided me with as many favorites as science fiction. When done well, I can’t help but fall in love with a sci-fi story. But why is that?

Explore Unlimited Possibilities

When you read a science fiction story, you explore one of the many possibilities set before humanity. Dystopian, utopian, post or pre-apocalyptic, with or without invading aliens, with more or less-advanced technology, each story explores a specific and often unique path. Even if you go with the same scenario, the possibilities are endless. In a dystopian world, people can react so very differently, so many possible futures can be written.

Go as Far as You Want

Near of distant future, everything is open for your exploration. You can travel to the point where we colonize the universe, or well beyond it to the point we’ve reverted to a medieval society. See our Roman ancestry shape our future empires (hint: try the Red Rising series for a particularly good take on this), or watch us merge with alien races.

There is no telling how short or how long your trip may be. It will still be enjoyable.

It’s a Little Bit Like Magic

If faced with an advanced enough technology, you won’t be able to see it as anything but magic. Sure, you might have it explained to you, and grasp the most basic concepts, but the idea of an entire species merged into one great mind sounds a lot like magic, doesn’t it? Or medical technology so advanced, a wave of someone’s hand would cure all deadly diseases, wouldn’t that sound like a fairytale? Or immortal human beings with bodies of steel? The more you think about it, the more magical it sounds.

Whether it’s reading or writing, I always go back to science fiction. It’s as if the road opened by I, Robot, Star Trek, and Dune can never be abandoned. I just have to see where it takes me. In my latest gay science fiction novella, Angel’s Feather, I got to explore a dystopian, post-apocalyptic Earth where humanity failed to learn their lessons. The next installments will allow me to discover more of the Universe, its rules and denizens. In other stories, I might take a less bleak path for humanity and see them thrive. Who knows?

Angel’s Feather Synopsis

How far would you go for the one you love? How much of yourself would you sacrifice?

Trapped on a decaying Earth and cut off from the rest of the Universe, humans are no longer allowed to leave their planet. Break this one law and you die: a penalty enforced by flyers, aliens who look like angels of long-lost religions. Michael, the flyers’ leader, is the Punisher who carries out every public execution.

Adam, a young human with near-perfect memory, is committed to rebuilding Earth and a true believer in the flyers’ dominion. While Adam’s support for flyers isn’t a secret, his deep love for Michael is. Not even Michael knows, for his kind never take human lovers, and to Adam, they are too far above him to reach.

In his broken and unwelcoming world, Adam’s love can only lead to pain, loss, and disaster. Yet there is no force in the huge expanse of stars and galaxies that can stop Adam from following Michael to the end of existence. Not even Adam’s own beliefs.
